Imphal, June 09 2015 :
Manipur BJP chief Th Chaoba hit out at Ibobi Government on Tuesday for allegedly failing to take steps to cope with the current problem of shortage of irrigation water faced by farmers in the State.
Manipur is an agrarian State and irrigated agriculture is dependent on an adequate water supply, but the Congress Government is neglecting woes of the farmers whose farmland has become dry due to scanty rainfall this season, Th Chaoba told a press meet at the party office here.
The State has no major industries and its economy is based on producing and maintaining crops and farmland, he said.
The State BJP president demanded that the Agriculture Department disclose its policy to deal with the present dry condition.
He said the concerned Government departments are also not paying any attention to the issue till date.
Policy for supply of irrigation water can be taken up by the Minor Irrigation and Command Area Development Authority (CADA) of Manipur Government.
"The Manipur Government should give special focus on the crop growing which has been interrupted by non-availability of water in the field," Chaoba urged.
