Imphal, June 09 2015 :
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the brutal murder of Ningthoujam Rebika Chanu at Heirok Part-II said it was regretful that the Education Minister's vehicle was vandalised yesterday.
The JAC said that the incident happened due to some misunderstandings between the people of Heirok and Wangjing.
Addressing a press meet today at Manipur Press Club, convener of the JAC Ningthoujam Ajit said that tension between people Heirok and Wangjing erupted after some mischief mongers spread rumours with a diabolic intent.
He further clarified that the mob had burnt down the houses of the two persons after the repeated pleas to bring out the accused killers went unheeded.
People of Wangjing went on a publicity drive informing people that the two houses burnt by a mob from Heirok belonged to innocent people, he said.
Education Minister who is also the local MLA of Heirok M Okendro came to pacify the two groups after a situation arose where a clash was imminent.
But the mob turned against him and the unfortunate incident had occurred, added Ajit.
Meanwhile JAC adviser Mandir Laishram stated that the irate locals of Heirok burnt down the houses as people do not trust the Government machineries and it was very unfortunate that such an incident had happened.
Further he asserted that N Bisheswor and Robinson's pleading innocence in the case was too early as investigation is still going on.
Moreover, the clarification that both of them are innocents could be a means to escape punishment as Thoubal police have not yet given any official statement, he added.
He urged the State Government to set up a fast track Court to expedite trials such rape and murder cases in future.
He added that the JAC along with people of Heirok will continue with various forms of agitation if the authority concerned fails to perform their work sincerely and bring out the real culprits.
He further assured that if the duo is truly innocent and were not involved in the killing of Rebika, locals of Heirok will help in whatever way they can to rebuild their houses.
