Imphal, September 08 2014:
The Indo-Myanmar Border Trade Union has urged the government to set up a separate directorate for trade & commerce under the Look East Policy of Central Government for facilitating Indo-Myanmar Border Trade which in turn will boost economy of the State.
Addressing a press meet here at Manipur Press Club, W Nabachandra, president of Indo-Myanmar Border Trade Union stated that though large scale trade between India and Myanmar started after Land Custom Station of Indo-Myanmar Border Trade was opened in the year 1995, people of the State have been not benefitted much which is due to lack of attention from the government.
He maintained that such directorate had been already set up in other north eastern States of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram including Arunachal Pradesh and asserted that certain benefits under domestic and foreign trade policies will be availed once the directorate is set up here in the State.
Lamenting that the union has been urging the government to set up the directorate and enact State Trade Policy for the last many years but no substantial step has been taken up so far, he said that it is high time for the government to initiate measures to establish transit trade with Asian countries so as to strengthen economy and generate jobs.
While also urging to set up integrated check post to facilitate Indo-Myanmar Border Trade at the earliest, he cautioned that the union will resort to launch intense agitation if the government does not pay heed to its demands and put into action.
