Imphal, May 12 2013:
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the death of Karam Bishorjit of Kongba Kshetri Leikai at JNIMS Hospital on May 10 has demanded the State Government to terminate the negligent medical staffs, who were on duty, from their respective services.
Bishorjit died on May 10 at JNIMS Hospital, Porompat after a minor operation on tonsillitis was performed.
The JAC Against Unnatural Death of Karam Bishorjit Meitei by On Duty Doctor held a sit-in-protest at Kongba Thongkhong today decrying the negligent acts of the doctors and nurses who were on duty at JNIMS Hospital at the time of Bishorjit's death.
Members of local clubs and Meira Paibi Lup took part in the protest.
A member of the JAC stated that Bishorjit had gone to JNIMS Hospital along with his wife and child on May 10 after he complained of a severe pain in his throat.
A nurse who was on duty at that time told Bishorjit that his ailment could be treated by performing a minor operation.
The operation was performed successfully and he was quite healthy after that.
However, his health deteriorated at around 9.30 pm on the same day.
He requested the nurses to provide oxygen, but he was kept in a hard condition with no oxygen supplied for about an hour.
More than an hour later, an oxygen cylinder without mask was brought in but it was of no use to Bishorjit then.
The JAC member contended that Bishorjit died from the negligence of doctors and nurses who were on duty.
The medical staff of JNIMS had even violated the standard norms of performing operations.
Most of them might have been recruited through back door.
The JAC has also demanded the Government to provide a suitable job to the wife of deceased Bishorjit and cautioned that it would launch intense agitation along with various civil organizations if the government fails to fulfill their demands by May 14 .
