JOINING THE nationwide strike called by the All Bar Association of Delhi against the Anti Public and Anti Society amendments in section 41 and section 309 of Criminal Procedure Code as well as section 2 (e) of the Limited Liability Partnership Act, the lawyers of the state on Tuesday protested the amendment infront of the Chirap court in Imphal West.
The strike was organised by the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) and no official works were done for the day.
Under the new amendment, the police, instead of arresting the accused, will be obliged to issue a "notice of appearance" for any offences punishable with imprisonment up to seven years.
Seven years or even less is the maximum penalty for a host of offences including attempt to commit culpable homicide under section 308, 393, 325, 304 A .
Talking to media persons, L.Jayentakumar, general secretary of AMBA informed that the amendment was an 'anti public' and 'anti society' amendment in sections 41 and 309 of the Criminal Procedure Code as well as section 2 (e) of the Limited Liability Partnership Act.
Once the amendment is implemented in the country or the state, crime will only increase, the general secretary of the AMBA asserted.
Jayentakumar also informed that Mrs.Mayawati, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh had opposed the amendment and its implementation in her state even as minister of women and child development, Renuka Choudhary had challenged her own government against the amendment.
Renuka Choudhary even challenged the re-examination of the amendment, added Jayentakumar.
The AMBA will also submit a memorandum to the chief minister and the concerned authorities about the amendment and its affects on Wednesday, informed the general secretary of the association.
