59th Wildlife Week Celebration concludes
High time for prompt measures to save wildlife species from going extinct: Francis Ngajokpa

The 59th Wildlife Week Celebration organized by Forest Department, Government of Manipur which had started from September 28 concluded at Gandhi Memorial Hall here today.
The valedictory function was graced by Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Minister Francis Ngajokpa; W Brajabidhu, MLA Lamsang Assembly Constituency and PN Prasad, Chief Wildlife Warden who is also the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honor respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Ngajokpa stated that the rampant clearing of forests has led to decreased number of wild life species apart from affecting climatic condition.
He asserted that it is high time to come up with prompt measures to save the wildlife species from going extinct.

Expressing apprehension over poachers hunting rare wild life species for meat which is punishable under law, the chief guest hailed those individuals who have received awards in recognition of their efforts to save the wildlife species.
PN Prasad said that the Wild Life Celebration was inaugurated at Thingpui village in Churachandpur district during which number of various species found in the district was counted.
The Forest Department is collaborating with Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun to include Keibul Lamjao National Park in the list of World Heritage Site, he disclosed.
He added that the department is also taking up steps to identify types of migrant birds in the State.
As part of the programme, State Wildlife Protection Incentive Awards 2014 were presented to several organizations and individuals in recognition of their efforts to save wildlife species in the State.
Organizations which were honored with the awards are People for Animals (PFA) Thoubal; Environmental Reformation & Sangai Protection Forum, Keibul; Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Sekmaijin, and the Volunteer Langol, while those individuals who received the award are Laishram Shamungou, staff reporter of Sangai Express; MA Salam, Officer-in-Charge of Churachandpur Police Station; Thoudam Churachand, Sub-Inspector of Sugnu Police Station and Ningombam Lolil, IRB Havildar.
Awards were also presented to winners of State level drawing/painting competition, article writing competition and wildlife photography competition held in connection with the week-long celebration.
