Imphal, June 19 2013:
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has said that all street vendors want spaces around the three Ema Markets of Khwairamband Bazar and so the State government is facing difficulty in addressing their problems.
He was replying to a Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA Dr I Ibohalbi during the ongoing 5th Session of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly today.
Ibohalbi pointed out that the street vendors are facing harassment of police personnel while struggling to earn their daily breads by selling goods at Khwairamband Bazar.
He proposed that they should be allowed to sell goods at least for some hours from 4 am till 11 am, if not for the whole day.
Replying to Ibohalbi, Chief Minister Ibobi said that the government would look into the proposal.
However, the problem in providing spaces to street vendors lies with the licensed vendors, who often complain of getting low sales proceeds after allowing the street vendors around Khwairamband Bazar, he noted.
He further stated that the temporary market sheds at Nagamapal have been converted into godowns and thereafter street vendors began to sell goods on road sides.
Vending spaces for street vendors have been provided at Lamphel Super Market, but they don't find it proper.
The problem of street vendors cannot be solved easily as their exact numbers are yet to be ascertained, Ibobi added.
