Imphal, August 07 2014:
Saying that the ongoing protest by students of Manipur University against implementation of Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 in the university cannot be suppressed just by declaring holidays by the university authority, the Joint Students' Co-ordination Committee (JSCC) has the Vice Chancellor of the University Prof HNK Sarma squarely responsible for the violent standoff that occurred inside the varsity campus yesterday and demanded his resignation for the alleged failure to address grievances of the students.
Addressing a press meet in this regard at the office of KSA here today, Th Premananda, convener of JSCC, decried the notice issued by Registrar of Manipur University Prof N Lokendro directing the hostellers to vacate their hostel rooms within 4 pm of August 6 and subsequent highhandedness of police causing injuries to several students who were protesting against the order.
He said using rubber bullets, tear gas shells and smoke bombs by the state police to crack down on student protestors inside the campus of MU yesterday was an act of cruelty and "We condemn the act of Prof Sarma who allowed the police to attack the students" .
Demanding the MU authority to solve the impasse over the admission reservation policy so that normal classes could be resumed instead of taking hasty decision to close the varsity, Premananda alleged that the VC is still unwilling to make commitment and solve the issue over admission reservation policy.
The student leader pointed out that many students of the university coming from far flung areas are reeling under intense hardships following the evacuation order and informed that the committee in collaboration with several clubs of the locality has opened a relief camp at the market shed just opposite to the university where around 150 students affected by the order are taking shelter.
Asserting that academic atmosphere in the university should be maintained at any cost, Premananda pledged that the committee will extend all possible help to the students who are staying in the relief.
