Nemcha distributes horticulture crops

Textiles, Commerce & Industry and Cooperation minister Nemcha Kipgen distributed horticulture crops at Kangpokpi town on Monday.
The local MLA distributed the crops under the theme "Cultivation of Horticulture Crops as an alternative for Poppy Cultivation in Hill Areas".
The minister distributed 400 saplings of litchi, 15 bags of ginger, 80 bags of turmeric, 1500 saplings of lemon, and 5000 saplings of pineapple to 60 beneficiary villages under Kangpokpi AC in the presence of P Pramo Devi, deputy director Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Kangpokpi.
Addressing the farmers, Nemcha Kipgen said that the state government under the dynamic leadership of chief minister N Biren has been carrying out a drive against illegal poppy cultivation in the hill areas.
She said that to combat poppy cultivation which has become a social problem the government has taken up a multi-pronged approach through inter-departmental efforts to provide alternative sources of livelihood to the illegal poppy farmers, who have agreed to stop illegal cultivation with a sustainable integrated farming system.
Nemcha then encouraged the farmers to start with strong determination on the alternative livelihood under the innovative new scheme of the government for Manipur's better future.
She also assured that in consultation with the chief minister and the authority concerned crops, seeds and vegetables will be provided as per preference of the farmers.
The farmers expressed their desire to cultivate Kachai lemon, low-chilling apple, large cardamom, and cashew nut, and submitted lists of crops, seeds and vegetables to the minister, who in turn, told them that the lists would be sent to the authorities concerned for distribution in the second phase.
