MTFD seeks Centre's intervention to bring solution to problems of tribals

Representatives of Manipur Tribals Forum, Delhi (MTFD) along with five members of Autonomous District Council (ADC) Churachandpur met Minister of Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram and the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi to seek the Centre's intervention on bringing a political solution to the problems faced by the tribal communities in the State.
The team also submitted a memorandum to both the leaders highlighting major concerns of the hill people and "history of discriminations and subjugation to the tribals" of the State.
Both the leaders assured the delegation that necessary steps would be taken up to resolve all problems, according to a press statement from MTFD spokesperson Lakpachui Siro.
The delegation requested the President to meet Internal Security Secretary Ashok Prasad who visited Churachandpur on Tuesday and spent three hours with the people of the district.
The team strongly urged the President that the Secretary must be consulted before he makes any decision relating to the three bills recently passed in the Manipur Assembly, should the bills come to his office for consideration.
The President was presented with a shawl brought from Churachandpur which he graciously received.
The team strongly urged Jual Oram to protect the rights of tribal communities recognized by the Constitution of India.
Further, the team requested him to play an advocating role for the suffering tribals of the State within his own Government, the statement said.
