Imphal, January 13 2020:
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in collaboration with Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) organized a one day consultation programme to understand the mental health needs of children and adolescents, especially children with disabilities, at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound today.
State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Manipur, Dr RK Kumarjit Singh and MCPCR Chairperson, Sumatibala Ningthoujam, graced the inaugural function as the chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the function, RK Kumarjit underscored the importance for creating awareness about Mental Health Act, 1987, among the masses.
There is a need for establishing adequate number of relevant institutions besides making collective effort of Government, NGOs and public in addressing mental health issues in the State, Kumarjit added.
In her speech, Sumatibala pointed out that keeping burdening the children with over expectation by parents, sometimes cause development of mental health issues in the children.
Mental stress, harassment, sexual assault and disappointment are also other factors for developing mental issues in children, she added, saying that parents and guardians initially require knowing and understanding of the capabilities and talents of their children before asking them to do something or while moulding them.
She then appealed all to take collective responsibility in identifying the problems faced by children in the society and in shaping them to create a brighter Manipur.
