Imphal, January 11 2013:
Seeking electoral reforms in the country, All India Youth Federation (AIYF) is all set to conduct mass symposium and agitations across the country.
Announcing this during a press conference at Irabot Bhavan here today, Vice President of National Working Committee of AIYF Akham Kunjakeshwor observed that corruption by politicians, violence during election and unequal representation in assembly is only because of the present electoral system in the county.
The consequence of the present system is "dire" and provides no room for other smaller political parties especially regional parties to play any significant role in the political affairs of the State.
Kunjakeshwor said that once the proportional representation electoral system came into practice; it could control election expenses and malpractices during elections and corruption by elected representatives.
Moreover, under this system voters can choose their favourite political party and vote for it.
Based on the number of voters, political parties would send their representatives to represent a particular constituency in the Assembly and the Parliament.
Lesser the number of voter shares, lesser would be the number of its representatives.
He contended that because of various loopholes, Indian political system has lost its credibility and there is no point any more to stick to this old and wasteful electoral system.
More than 80 countries have adopted proportional representation electoral system and is becoming the most popular and favourable form of electoral system in the world.
While highlighting the action programmes to be launched by AIYF and other associated political parties, President of AIYF Manipur State Council Sh Purnimashi Devi said that as part of its demand to implement proportionate representation electoral system in India, they have already submitted a memorandum to central government on 4th December 2012 and launched various agitations in this regard.
In continuation, a symposium on, 'electoral reformation-need of the hour' would be conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal on 15th January 2013 and press the Parliament for taking up the issue during the upcoming March budget session.
