Snowfall in State as mercury dips

Along with sudden climatic changes witnessed since the past few years, Manipur recorded minus 2 degree Celsius and witnessed extensive snowfall this morning.
Manipur was colder yesterday with temperature plummeting to minus 1 degree Celsius.
Directorate of Environment Research Officer Dr T Brajakumar said that weather condition seen in Manipur is a result of global climate change.
According to records, Manipur was as cold as minus 1 degree Celsius in January 1973 .
Similar sharp dip in the mercury were also recorded on January 29, 2003 and January 18, 2007 .

These climate events are clear indicators that Manipur too has been affected by global climate change, Dr Brajakumar said.
Manipur recorded 1.7 degree Celsius in January, 1958.Since then the average minimum temperature in Manipur was rising steadily.
This year too average minimum temperature was rising.
According to environmentalist Dr RK Ranjan, the drastic change in weather conditions would have adverse impacts on not only mankind but also plants and animals.
Plants and animals which cannot adapt to the changing climatic condition may even face extinction.
Meanwhile, Forest Department has taken up some measures to protect animals of Iroisemba Zoological Garden from the cold wave.
Reports have been recieved about abundant snowfalls in the higher reaches of Senapati and Ukhrul districts.
