Imphal, July 29 2013:
An unknown disease has ruined paddy plants across 30 villages of Chingai Block in Ukhrul district, Secretary of Chingai Village Development Committee R Yangmi told Hueiyen Lanpao today.
He further informed that similar disease had destroyed the paddy plants at Chingai Block last year and the farmers could not reap anything from the fields.
The infestation of this mysterious disease has made farmers apprehensive of possible crop failure this year.
The villagers of Chingai have to purchase rice the whole year as their crops failed last year due to that unknown disease.
However, the State Government did not render any assistance to mitigate the sufferings of the villagers, Yangmi lamented.
He stated that a 50-kg bag of superfine rice costs Rs.1000 while local variety of rice costs Rs.1500 at Chingai Block.
The farmers are now worried over mass destruction of paddy plants.
The Agriculture Department should take up effective measures to control the spread of such unknown diseases, the Secretary urged.
