Imphal, November 26 2011:
Normal life of the people of the state was affected to a certain level today by the 24-hour general strike called by the Maoist Communist Party (MCP) protesting against the indifference of the state government regarding the 110 days long ongoing economic blockade, the issue of "Supra State body" and the burning down of phumdi huts.
The general strike started from last midnight and is due to end today midnight.
As a result of the 24 hour bandh called by the MCP, business and Government establishments were shut down, and roads wore a deserted look as passengers and private vehicles stopped plying on the roads.
All inter-state bus services and passenger services came to a standstill because of the strike.
All educational institutions, both private and government were also seriously affected by the bandh.
However, no report of any untoward incidents during the bandh was reported till the filling of this report.
The numbers of staff attending Government offices were at a very low level.
The impact of the bandh was also felt at various other districts apart from Imphal East and West.
Hardly a handful of people could be seen on the roads.
The Sangai festival held at Mela ground, Hatta kangjeibung, also had a deserted look, as the number of people coming to the festival came down.
All cinema halls were also closed down as a result of the bandh.
However, air flights to and from Imphal Airport operated as scheduled.
The aggrieved armed organization has also indicated that the bandh might be extended for another 24 hours.
