The court of the fifth district and sessions judge, Alok Kumar Dubey, on Friday sentenced a woman and her brother-in-law to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case.
According to the FIR lodged with the Town police station, one Rameswar Das of Harijan Tola in the Shivpahar locality of the town was killed on December 30, 2006 by his wife Draupadi Devi and younger brother Ajoy Das, who had established illicit relationship.
Rameswar worked as a labourer in Assam.
Once when he visited his home, he learnt about the illicit relationship between his wife and brother.
In order to escape his wrath, Draupadi and Ajoy strangled him to death.
The deceased had an altercation with his wife, who was then on the family way, prior to his killing.
Both the accused were sent to jail soon after the incident.
Draupadi delivered a baby in the jail during the trial of the case which concluded in a record period of one year.
Criminals held: A joint team of Dumka and Ranchi police on Friday nabbed seven members of an inter-state gang, who had recently made a futile attempt to commit dacoity in the local branch of the Central Bank of India.
The arrested persons, who have been identified as Amit Das, Amrendra Yadav, Mohammad Jabbar, Muslim Ansari, Vinod Kumar, Suresh Prasad and Rajesh Pandey, were planning to commit some crime when they were arrested from a hotel in Ranchi.
They have confessed to their involvement in bank dacoities in neighbouring states.
In the last couple of years, the gang looted over Rs 4.50 crore from different banks.
SP Arun Kumar Singh said that the district police conducted a raid in a hotel situated in the state capital with the help of the Ranchi police after receiving a tip-off.
Singh said the arrested persons would be taken on remand for interrogation.
The gang's attempt to commit robbery in the local branch of the Central Bank of India branch situated at Tata Showroom Chowk on August 1 was foiled by a banker, Arun Kumar Tiwari, who managed to escape from their clutches and raised an alarm.
The criminals fled the scene in panic leaving behind a carbine, two magazines loaded with 49 rounds of live cartridges and their cellphones.
