Imphal, August 01 2020:
Citing dilapidated condition of the bridges along the Imphal-Jiribam highway, the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union has appealed truckers not to ferry loads exceeding 15 tonnes.
Stating that several bridges along the Imphal-Jiribam highway are in 'very rickety condition', general secretary of the union, Maimom Anil, in a statement asserted that loads exceeding 15 tonnes may damage the bridges causing temporary suspension of all transport related services.
Such a scenario will add more to the woes of the people amid the COVID-19 lockdown, he said.
Appealing truckers, agents and truck owners not to ferry loads exceeding 15/16 tonnes, he said earlier on July 23, the Jiribam Superintendent of Police had directed the truckers against carrying goods beyond the maximum permitted tonnage limit.
In case any truck is found carrying goods exceeding the tonnage limit (15 tonnes) and damages any of the bridges, the owner of the vehicle and agent concerned shall bear the responsibility, he said.
