Imphal, September 02 2026: BJP North East in-charge and National spokesman Dr Sambit Patra has called upon the people to wait for the next step.

Dr Sambit Patra, who arrived here along with BJP Manipur co-in-charge Rajeev Babbar, made this statement referring to the recent decision of the Ministry of Home Affairs to defer census exercise in Manipur.

Speaking to media persons at Hotel Imphal, Dr Sambit Patra claimed that the Narendra Modi Government has been paying special attention to Manipur.

In line with the wish of the people of Manipur, Census 2027 has been deferred in the State, he said.

The decision to defer the census exercise reflected the Centre's commitment to the interest of Manipur, Dr Sambit Patra said.

He said that the census was deferred after several MLAs and CSOs came to Delhi and presented the wish of Manipuri people to Central leaders.

On being enquired if the Centre has taken up any step regarding the people's demand for updating the NRC, Dr Sambit Patra said that adopting a decision at the level of the Ministry of Home Affairs will take some time.

Responding to the Manipuri people's demand for updating the NRC and deferring the census, the Central Government has deferred census operations in the State, he said.

Appealing to the people to keep faith in the Central Government, the BJP National spokesman maintained that the Centre will act in time in line with the wishes of the people.

Sources said that Dr Sambit Patra will hold meetings with BJP MLAs and party leaders before leaving Imphal on Thursday.

He will talk with party MLAs and leaders about the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly which is due in 2027 .

According to the sources, Dr Sambit Patra's visit is also related to possible expansion of the Khemchand Government's Cabinet.
