Imphal, May 19 2015 :
A 24 hour State wide general strike is called by Mao Council from midnight on May 22 in protest against the indifferent attitude of the State government to opposed land grabbing at Dzuko Valley and Kozirii bordering Nagaland.
The general strike is also supported by civil society organisations like United People's Front (UPF), National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO), and Committee for Koziiri and Dzuko land boundary, etc.
In a press release Mao Council also urged the people of the State to extend cooperation and support to the strike.
Mention may also be made that the land encroachment issue by the Southern Angami People's Organisation was brought to the notice of the State Government with a deadline for a befitting response as the situation became alarming since last October.
A memorandum was also submitted by the agitators threatening State wide strike.
During the strike media fraternity, medical, water supply and electricity are exempted, says a press release by L Ephriiwo, Information and Publicity Secretary Mao Council.
It is also reported that if the government failed to take up the right step in safeguarding the territory threatened by Southern Angami People's Organisation even after the strike the people living at the border may be forces to deal with the matter on their own and the State government should be held responsible for any untoward consequences.
An appeal was made by the civil society organisation to keep a police post at Dzuko Valley.
Dzuko Valley as such is a tourist hotspot with many national, international and local tourists turning up every year.
A river runs in the valley atop hills and there is no demarcation and the valley is shared by Manipur and Nagaland and major portion of the valley falls in the Manipur side.
However the Nagaland government had built road and now a guest house there while there is not even an approach road from the Manipur side.
But the land encroachment for constructing a road by a Nagaland based civil society organisation is being protested from different corners of Manipur.
