TET for Meetei Mayek : It is to recruit teachers: Okendro

While clarifying that the purpose of TET to be conducted for Meetei Mayek on 28th April is to recruit teachers for teaching Meetei Mayek 'under unavoidable circumstances' as the class X examination-2015 would be in Meetei Mayek, Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro Singh has wished all the intending candidates to prepare well for the test.
Replying to questions raised by members of Meetei Mayek Expert Committee regarding inclusion of TET under the guidelines of National Council of Teachers Education during the monthly meeting of the Committee held at his office chamber today, Minister Okendro replied that there is no purpose of conducting TET if Meetei Mayek teachers are not to be recruited.
An unavoidable situation has arrived to recruit teachers for Meetei Mayek as the matric examination of 2015 has to be conducted in the native script.
With an aim to provide scope for development and promotion of the native script and the language, the meeting resolved to ensure teaching of Major Indian Languages (MIL) and removal of additional or alternative English for classes upto higher secondary level in accordance the two languages system of the National Curriculum Framework.
Regarding the amendment of Manipur Language Act-1979, the expert committee resolved to change the line mentioned in the Act "written in Bengali script" as "written in Meetei Mayek" (the concurrent use of Bengali script may be allowed to continue for a period of 10 years from the date of publication of this notification in the State gazette).
Accordingly, it was also decided to press for amendment of the earlier cabinet memo in this regard in the state assembly.
While discussion the third agenda of the meeting, Joint Secretary of Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) Babudhon pointed out that altogether 7320 candidates have applied for TET in Meetei Mayek.
Out of this, 6454 candidates are for TET in Meetei Mayek and 866 of them are for Meetei Mayek proficiency test.
There are 1794 general candidates, 4801 OBC candidates; 477 SC and 210 ST candidates for the test and the admit cards would be issued on 20th April.
Furthermore, the expert committee meeting resolved to provide opportunity for awarding National Sahitya Award and State literary award for books written in Meetei Mayek.
Members of the expert committee namely Chairman of BOSEM P Dhanakumar (IPS); Deputy Secretary of Education (S) H Mathang (MCS); Secretary of BOSEM Rajmohan; Joint Secretary of COHSEM, Babudhon; DDOA of SCERT Romel; Asst Prof of GP Women's College Dr Waikhom Romesh; President of MEELAL Sh Tomba Mangang, Editor of Hueiyen Lanpao (Meetei Mayek) M Shivadutta Luwang; Additional Secretary of Higher Education, NCRT, Adult Education, Kh Raghumani (IAS), Advisor of All Manipur Private School Welfare Association, Namoijam Tomba were among others who attended the meeting.
