DIG instructed to study security lapses

Imphal, April 18 2013:
With regard to the killing of a truck driver and burning of two trucks by unidentified armed persons along Imphal-Jiribam highway between Seijang and Charoi Pandong village last night, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Gaikhangam has instructed DIG (Range IV) Dr S Ibocha to investigate the incident and see if there is any security lapse.
Notably, the trucks were moving together with security escorts.
Speaking to media persons this evening, Gaikhangam stated that DIG S Ibocha has been directed to submit his investigation report as soon as possible.
The two trucks were moving with security escorts but they were left behind as they broke down on the way, Gaikhangam told reporters.
While truck driver Asem Babu (40) of Samurou Awang Leikai was shot dead by the unidentified persons, one handyman sustained injuries and he is being treated at RIMS.
Saying that it still remains unclear which group was behind the violent attack, the Deputy Chief Minister conveyed that the DGP has been instructed to flush out UG elements from the area where the attack took place.
On being enquired if the trucks moving with security escorts were left to themselves in case they broke down on the way, Gaikhangam maintained that the matter needs investigation.
Condemning the violent attack and the brutal murder, the Deputy Chief Minister appealed to all the people inhabiting alongside the highway to make the highway safe.
He also conveyed solidarity to the bereaved family.
He further instructed the DGP to convene a joint meeting and discuss about enhancing coordination among security forces who are posted along the highway.
