Imphal, February 09 2013 :
Amidst restriction imposed by agitating employees of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) against cleaning up Imphal city during their cease-work strike, Councilors of IMC, City Police Personnel and members of various NGOs today launched a cleanliness drive in and around Khwairamband Keithel today.
It may be noted here that the historic Khwairamband Keithel has virtually become as garbage dumping ground for shopkeepers for the last few months as IMC employees have undergone an indefinite cease-work strike since November last year in pursuance of their demands for clearing the backlog salaries of 24 months.
Earlier, in its effort to negotiate with the agitators, IMC had released 2 months' salaries.
Councilor of IMC's Ward No.6 Ph Praneshwori, who took part in the cleanliness drive told to Hueiyen Lanpao that since the very first day of the cease work strike the city has become polluted with remnants vegetables, fishes and other unwanted materials piling up and causing a lot of inconveniences to both sellers and buyers.
So, IMC Councilors with the support of City Police personnel and other city based NGOs, have removed the garbage and cleaned up the area.
Ward No.7 Councilor RK Bimolini appealed to all especially shopkeepers to keep their garbage at the designated site for depositing them and not to throw around mindlessly.
