International seminar on human security commences

A Two-Day International Seminar on Human Security in the North East Region: Challenges and Predicament jointly organised by Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur; Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University and Centre for Alternative Discourse Manipur commenced from today at the Senate Hall of Manipur University.
Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGTU), Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh Prof CD Singh and Former Director of Audio-Visual Research Centre (AVRC), Manipur University Prof Arambam Lokendro graced the inaugural function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
OSD of IGTU, Regional Campus, Manipur Th Oliver Monsang and Registrar of Manipur University Prof N Lokendro also attended the inaugural function as Guests of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof CD Singh observed that the people of the country are facing various types of problems in their lives.
Among them, security is one of the most important problems which is why the seminar is being organised.
When compared with other countries, human development in the state is very slow.
Moreover, various conflict situations in the country clearly indicate the weakness of governance in the country, Prof CD Singh added.
Prof Lokendro Arambam, who presided over the function, said that the seminar would help in discussing and determining the solution to the conflict situation and issues over militarisation.
It would also help in finding out how the people of the conflict affected regions spend their lives.
The first session of the seminar today was held under the theme 'Special Laws, Militarisation and Human Security' with Prof Lokendro Arambam in the chair.
Among the resource persons, Dr Bhagat Oinam talked on 'Human Security Amidst Grand Political Narratives', Dr KS Subramaniam on 'Special Laws and Human Security in the North East India', Prof Kamal M Chenoy on 'The Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act 1958' and Prof Anuradha M Chenoy on 'Why Manipur Needs Human Security' in the first session.
The second session was held under the theme 'Conflict, Livelihood and Development' with Prof Amar Yumnam in the chair during which Prof JJ Roy Burman presented talk on 'Ethnic Movements in Assam', Mr S Gangte on 'Livelihood Challenges Under Conflict Situation', Dr Ch Priyoranjan on 'Conflict, Livelihood and Human Security: The Manipur Experience' and Dr RK Ranjan on 'Tipaimukh Dam: Threat to Human Security and Death Trap for Indigenous People' as resource persons.
The seminar is being attended by more than 200 delegates from different universities of India, Bangkok Thailand and other countries.
