Awareness and consultation prog on sustainable development held

The Molnoi Area Welfare Council along with the Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur, jointly organized a community awareness and consultation on 'Sustainable Development and Protection of Resources' at Molnoi, Tengnoupal district, today.
The meeting was attended by several village Chiefs of Molnoi area and representatives of students and women organizations.
Jiten Yumnam of Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur provided resource input on sustainable development and protection of natural resources.
He also opined that the aggresive push for mining in Tengnoupal, Chandel, Ukhrul and Kamjong areas, to mine chronium, limestone and copper etc will destroy the biodiversity of Manipur and inter-generational survival of indigenous communities of Manipur.
The secy of Molnoi Area Welfare Council, Minlal Haokip, shared the development processes in Molnoi and other Tengnoupal areas while Lhunthang Mate of Zion village expressed that indigenous territories are rich in resources and it is critical that the Government consult and take consent of the traditional village institutions and villagers.
The other village chiefs also opined that the State and Central Government should advance the community protection of land and resources.
Further, the participants expressed concern that the extraction and mining industries will lead to destruction of forest, agricultural land, water resources etc and resolved to stand against any form of mining in Manipur without consent of the people.
