Samaritan aid extended to cancer patient

Imphal, June 12 2026: A 37-year-old internally displaced woman suffering from oral cancer has been provided monetary and emotional support by Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) .

A monetary assistance of Rs 2 lakh has been provided towards her treatment, said EHA's Bishnupur district's coordinator Dr Shantaram Chanambam.

The woman has three children, all under the age of 10, and the family has been staying at the prefabricated housing complex/relief camp at Kwakta Sericulture Farm, Bishnupur district.

Her family originally hails from Churachandpur.

They were forced to flee after violent conflict broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023 .

She is now receiving treatment at the American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Babina Specialty Hospital, Sajiwa, Imphal.

Dr Shantaram Chanambam said the woman has been suffering from oral cancer since November 2024 .

Initially, a lump/swelling inside the mouth was detected.

As it was causing her difficulties in opening the mouth, she approached a State-run hospital in Imphal and underwent a minor surgery to remove the lump, he said.

Her condition persisted even after the surgery and further treatment at a hospital in Guwahati, he added.

Her condition was later confirmed as an oral cancer after investigation at the American Oncology Institute, Imphal.

While an urgent surgery was recommended, she was facing financial difficulties.

This was when Emmanuel Hospital Association stepped in to rescue her, Dr Shantaram said.

The Emmanuel Hospital Association has extended her a sum of Rs 2 lakh for the surgery, he said.

Dr Shantaram said the EHA has been providing assistance to victims affected by the Manipur conflict.

The association has held medical camps and provided aid to internally displaced persons across several relief camps, he added.
