Imphal, October 07 2020:
A sit-in was organised today by the 'JAC Against the Unnatural Death of Phairembam ongbi Panthoi Devi' at Khagempalli Nganappi Thong community hall seeking justice for Panthoi who died yesterday at Raj Medicity.
Panthoi who gave birth to a baby boy on October 5 died at around 12.30 pm yesterday and locals and family members had charged that her death was unnatural and due to negligence on the part of the doctor concerned.
Placards reading "Panthoi's death is unnatural, we want justice", "Punish doctor concerned" and "Raj Medicity should bear responsibility for Panthoi's death" were displayed during the sit-in, which was attended by members of the JAC and locals of the members.
Speaking on the sideline of the sit-in protest, a relative of the deceased stated that she was shocked to learn of the death of Phairembam Ongbi Panthoi as she was admitted to the hospital in a healthy condition and had no record of other medical conditions.
The death was solely due to the negligence on the part of the doctor concerned, she alleged.
Due to carelessness of doctors, the State has witnessed many cases of death of women during child delivery or after giving birth, she continued.
Hospitals concerned should expel doctors involved in such cases and their license should be cancelled to avoid repeat of similar cases, she demanded.
Raj Medicity should bear responsibility to look after and raise the children of the deceased well, she said while appealing all concerned to provide the husband of the deceased an appropriate Government service to help meet the needs of their children.
JAC's secretary also maintained that the JAC considered the death as unnatural as Panthoi was admitted to the hospital in a very good state and child delivery reportedly went smoothly and normal.
The secretary of the JAC also informed that the mortal remains of the deceased will not be claimed until their demands are fulfilled.
The authorities should provide adequate compensation to the family members, the secretary said while demanding that the doctor's practice license should be terminated and police should register a case in connection with the incident.
The JAC will launch a series of agitations if their demands are not fulfilled within October 8, the secretary said.
