Joining other organisations in condemning arrest of two Jiribam-based journalists and a social activist, All manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) has called upon the Government to declare its stand on the issue without further delay.
Expressing that arrest of journalists Moirangthem Romeo and Atom Lukhoi Singh, and president of AJUCA M Maipaksana Mangang from their respective homes by police commandos on March 22 morning without issue arrest memos, merits most severe condemnation, an AMUCO statement issued by its publicity secretary observed that detention of the trio tantamount to abuse of law and constricting freedom of press.
It also decried members of the journalist fraternity frequently subjected to abuse by security forces and suggested to the Government that acting in the right earnest taking into account the general sentiment would be beneficial in the long run.
Meanwhile, All Jiribam United Clubs' Association, Apunba Jiribam Meira Paibi and All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (Jiribam branch) strongly condemned arrest of the three and demanded they be released immediately without any condition failing which intense agitation would be launched.
It may be mentioned that M Romeo is the jiribam correspondent of the ISTV news network and A Lukhoi correspondent of Poknapham daily.
Both are executive members of All Jiribam Working Journalists' Union.
