Attended by leaders of UPF and KNO, the umbrella bodies of the Kuki UG groups which are signatories to the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Government of India and the State, the meeting of the Joint Monitoring Group was held with Chief Secretary DS Poonia in the chair at the banquet hall of Ist MR here today.
Issues related to alleged violation of the ground rules of SoO and progress of the peace talk process were discussed in the meeting which was also attended by Director of Union Home Ministry Dr Mahenathan and representatives of Police, Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and BSF.
An informed source said Union Home Ministry representatives insisted that in case designated camp for cadres under KNO and UPF conglomerates cannot be completed within May this year, nearest police stations may be utilised for depositing the weapons.
In all 12 designated camps are supposed to be constructed out of which only two have been built so far at near Sapermeina and Moreh areas.
Is it informed that march 31 was actually set as deadline for constructing the camps but had to be deferred to May for there is remote possibility of meeting the first deadline.
based on report of unsatisfactory progress of construction works for another designated camp at vangai range, a team of Manipur Police Housing Corporation has been instructed to make spot inspection.
Apart from entrusting the Government to disburse the stipend of the UG cadres belonging to the various groups under UPF and KNO, the meeting also issued the renewed identity cards of the cadres.
During the course of the meeting, the Government proposed that the construction of the designated camps under its funding should be completed at the earliest possible.
From the Government side, provision of hygienic drinking water and solar lighting system were announced at the joint meeting.
On the other hand, the Chief Secretary chaired a meeting of Strategic Operation Group in his office chamber today and reviewed the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur.
The proposed fencing of Indo-Myanmar border that had kicked up a storm over the location of a Tamil temple presently on the Indian side but likely to be parted to Myanmar, construction of integrated check-post and border issues were also deliberated at the meeting.
Representatives of Police, Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and BSF attended the meeting.
