Prosecution of the accused in the Rs 55 lakhs MR uniforms scandal will begin from December 14 next before a special court constituted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Special judge, Manipur east, M Binoykumar Singh, is hearing the case.
It may be mentioned that the scandal had taken place in 1991-92 with the disappearance of a large quantity of Manipur Rifles uniforms, meant for supply to the men of several battalions of the force, from the stores of the 2nd Manipur Rifles unit headquarters.
The value of the disappeared uniforms was estimated at Rs 55,00,365.74.The special judge fixed December 14 as the date for prosecution hearing after taking up charge hearings on November 23 and 27.the three main accused in the case are the then commandant of the 2nd MR, N Ngairakpam Tangkhul, the then assistant commandant, 2nd MR, K Pishak Singh, and havildar N Jasobanta Singh, the then store-in-charge of the 2nd MR.charges against them have been framed under sections 409, 468, 471, 120-B of the IPC and under section 13 (1) � of the PC Act.
It may be mentioned that after the scandal came to light, it has been handed over to the CID, crime branch of the state police for investigation.
The three MR personnel were placed under suspension, though they were later reinstated.
