Environment and Ecology Wing, Government of Manipur will be setting up a Rs 12 crores Augmentation of Research and Development Laboratory for Environment in the State under funding of the Austrian Government.
Disclosing this today, a high level official said that sophisticated equipments will be installed for carrying out research in 20 different lines in the first phase of the project being taken up under the Indo-Austria Technical Co-operation.
As part of the project, 6 vehicles will be employed as mobile water treatment plants for treatment of water in local ponds, rivers and lakes besides checking the contents of the water, he said.
The official said that the treatment plants will also identify the amount of DDT used in plants and vegetables.
The use of DDT has been banned worldwide by the World Health Organization WHO).
The project will also be able to decide the amount of insecticide and pesticides imbedded in the plants.
The high level source said that the Centre has already approved the implementation of the project.
However the same has not been cleared by the State Government till date.
Experts will identify toxic materials in the water under the project, he further said.
