Imphal, October 28 2012:
Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women Dr L Ibetombi has expressed serious concern over the rising number of crimes against women and children.
Dr Ibetombi was speaking at a consultation programme held at MSCW office inside Lamphel DC Office complex today.
She observed that crimes against women and children are not only rising but their nature is also becoming more and more brutal.
Very often victims are rendered helpless by one means or another.
Victims were often told "what happened has happened" even if it was rape case.
Such words only encourage the criminals while denying justice to victims.
Violence against women begin from the day when a girl child is conceived.
There are many cases of female foeticide, discrimination, deprivation of adequate food and educational rights to girl children, she said.
To control crime against women, girls/women should be given equal treatment starting from the family.
The society, as a whole, should stand firm against any act violence against women.
Referring to the recent case of rape inside a fast food, the MSCW Chairperson sought exemplary punishment for all those found guilty.
She also pledged that the commission would make its best efforts to ensure that all accused of crimes against women are awarded befitting punishment.
MSCW Member Secretary Shanglakpam Meghachandra said that the commission recorded 230 cases of crimes against women between 2007 and 2011 .
The consultation programme was attended by senior journalist K Modhusudon, AK Sanaton, and a number of women activists, child activists and representatives of different NGOs.
