Bandh cripples normal life

The 18-hour State-wide bandh clamped by Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) passed off peacefully this evening.
However, the stir severely affected normal life with major markets in Imphal, Thou- bal and Bishnupur shut during the bandh.
Inter-State and inter-district passenger vehicles were off the road and attendence in most of the Government offices was minimal.
All the shops and business establishments in Khwairam-band Bazar, Singjamei, Lam- long, Andro parking and Kwakeithel remained closed.
Most of the major roads were blockaded by bandh enforcers.
Police fired tear gas cannisters on bandh supporters at Chingamkha where a sit-in-protest was staged later.
Around 200 women bandh supporters staged a sit-in-protest at Kongpal.
Tense con- frontation broke out between police and bandh supporters in Sekmai.

Reports which came from Bishnupur district said that major roads of the district were blockaded during the bandh.
In Thoubal district, band supporters blocked road at Kiyam, Haokha, Okram, Thoubal Wangmataba, Thoubal Bazar, Kshetri Leikai, Yairipok, Khangabok, Wangjing, Sugunu, Langmeidong, Wabagai and Kakching etc by burning tyres and putting boulders, logs and tree branches.
All the shops and business establishments in Thoubal Bazar, Yairipok, Wangjing and Kakching remained shut during the bandh.
Students of KM Blooming School and Khangabok High School took to street and blockaded NH-2 .
Police faced a tough time in dispersing the bandh enforcers at Thoubal Wangmataba.
They fired several rounds of tear gas shells and smoke bombs there.
Police asked detained bandh supporters to clean glass pieces scattered on the road at Thoubal Okram.
