Imphal, August 25 2015:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) is all set to observe the 50th anniversary of Chaklam Khongchat (Hunger Marchers' Day) on August 27 by holding a huge public meeting to put pressure on the Government to formulate a food price policy for the State.
AMSU has been marking the Hunger Marchers' Day every year to commemorate the historic event of August 27, 1965, Union Secretary General Manjit Sarangthem said at a press meet here on Tuesday.
He said the golden jubilee observance will begin at 3 am and floral tribute will be paid to the student martyrs at their memorial site in Singjamei Pishum Chinga Macha at 9 am.
On the occasion, a public meeting will be organised at the Manipur College multipurpose hall where resolutions will be taken pertaining to demand for formulation of a food price policy, Manjit informed.
He said the meet will exert pressure on the State Government to devise an appropriate food price policy for Manipur.
The AMSU secretary general said the non-Manipuris have been fixing food price at their will and monopolizing the business which has posed a serious threat to the people.
Manjit said the increasing number of non-locals in the State is also a matter of serious concern and demanded the Government to work out a suitable food price policy.
AMSU has taken serious note of the alleged visible strategies adopted by anti-social elements to create a food war in the State, he claimed.
The student leader appealed to people from all walks of life to participate in the August 27 observance and called on all concerned not to impose bandh and blockades on this day.
