Imphal, August 25 2015:
A team of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) would assess directly all the damaged portions of Mao-Imphal-Dimapur highway before repairing/re-construction work is initiated.
The highway suffered extensive damages at different areas for the first time in the last 50 years due to heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides.
In view of the gravity of the damages, PWD has written to MoRTH to send a team of officials for field assessment, informed an official source.
Movement of loaded heavy vehicles is still prohibited on these highway sections which suffered wide fissures, sinking and break down of culverts.
As appealed by the PWD, MoRTH's Guwahati regional officer Pawan Kumar would come to Imphal on August 27 together with an assistant to inspect the damaged portions of Mao-Imphal-Moreh highway.
Soon after landing at Imphal airport on August 27, Pawan Kumar, his assistant and engineers of PWD's National Highway Division would travel along Imphal-Moreh highway for a direct assessment of the damaged portions.
The same team would go to Mao on the next day to make a field inspection of the highway's condition at Mao, Maram and Senapati.
According to a tentative estimate made by the State PWD, repairing and re-construction of the damaged portions of Mao-Imphal-Moreh highway would require Rs 99.5 crore.
However, a proposal for the estimated cost has not been sent to the Ministry fearing that the Ministry may not believe the estimate until they make a field assessment of the damaged portions.
A proposal for the estimated cost would be sent to MoRTH after the regional officer and his assistant make an assessment of the damaged portions.
