Even as the planning to upgrade DM College to Rajiv Gandhi National University (RGNU) is already underway, sustained and concerted efforts are required to make the college fit to become a university.
Lack of hostel facilities for girls, poor maintenance and deplorable road condition within the campus have been undermining the college for the past many years.
For DM College to rise to the level of a university, the Government must first make up and improve infrastructure shortfalls apart from enhan-ching the existing staff.
Education Minister M Okendro earlier stated in media that Union HRD Minister Smriti Zubin Irani was supportive of the State Govemment's idea to set up a new university.
She also promised all possible assistance from the side of the Central Government.
The Education Minister was also hopeful that students would no longer face the difficulties of pursuing further studies in the State once the proposed university is set up.
Affiliated to Culcatta University at the time of its establishment in 1946, DM College changed its affiliation to Guwahati University in 1949 and again to Manipur University in 1981 .
Though the College does not provide hostel facilities for girls, it has a boys' hostel and a new boys' hostel has also been constructed within its campus.
