ADC member fortuitously escapes life attempt

Imphal, January 11 2011:
Government on Tuesday tightened up security of the members of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) following a life attempt to one of the members late Monday.
A suspected NSCN (IM) cadre attempted to kill ADC member, Hoping Jojo, presently staying at Khuman Lampak State Youth Centre, Imphal on Monday evening, while he was walking alone on the road near the Youth Hostel.
An unknown Tangkhul youth aged about 28, suspected to be a NSCN(IM) cadre, coming on a scooter stopped near him and took out a gun pointing at him.
He immediately alarmed the security guard at the youth hostel by shouting sipai, sipai .
The youth fled away northwards.
Police registered a case at Imphal Police Station under section related with attempt to murder.
Jojo of Lamlai Khunou village of Ukhrul's Phungyar is among 10 ADC members who are currently staying at Khuman Lampak State Youth Hostel and Youth Centre, Imphal following life threats received by them.
A total of 24 ADC members belonging to Naga tribes are presently taking shelter at various secured places as they have received warnings from the NSCN-IM.
Jojo was elected in the ADC election held in May and June of last year 2010 from 22-Loufe Riha of Ukhrul's Phungyar block.
Many civil organisations under the UNC have demanded nullification of elections to ADCs in four Naga dominated hill districts pressing the elected members to resign.
The UNC had set January 31 as the deadline for their resignation.
Since then, Manipur government has been providing security for the Naga ADC members.
In another related incident, personnel of 7th MR, Khabeisoi arrested Khaidem Joykumar Singh (35) son of Kh Tombi of Sagolband Moirang Hanuba, Imphal who served letters of monetary demands for the GPRN/NSCN-IM issued by Starson, Revenue Kilonser.
A demand letter GPRN File No.03/dt 24/11/2010, two pairs of spectacles, a Nokia handset EQ434 (8575159321), and ' 130 were seized from him.
Police said that he was arrested from the house of director of Health Services, Dr S Ibomcha Singh at Sangaiprou around 2 pm yesterday .
