Imphal, June 25 2018:
The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union has warned that the drivers transporting goods and commodities along the National Highway will immediately stop work if they are harassed in any way.
Speaking to media persons at the union office at MG Avenue today, its general secretary M Anil warned that if any so called truck owners, in collaboration with the Transport Commissioner, harass the drivers who are working tirelessly for the welfare of the people of Manipur in any way, the drivers will immediately cease work.
Pointing out that the union welcomes the Transport Commissioner's statement to detain any truck which is over the permissible weight, M Anil claimed that some cement merchants often requests the truck drivers along National Highway 37 to carry some of their items, thus increasing the weight of the trucks from the permissible 9 tonnes to around 15-18 tonnes and the drivers are not even properly compensated for the work.
He added that the union will abide by the orders of the Supreme Court and the High Court.
He also explained that six wheeled trucks can carry no more than 9 tonnes of weight and the rule is applicable all over India.
He further appealed to the Transport Commissioner to revoke the tonnage restriction along the two National Highways and based on the Central Motor Vehicles Act, make the maximum weight 9 tonnes for six wheeled trucks, 15 tonnes for 10 wheeled trucks and 20 tonnes for 12 wheeled trucks.
