Rainfall decreases, fields dry up

Imphal, June 20 2012:
With rate of rainfall this year drastically coming down in comparison to previous years, paddy fields in most part of the state have dried up.
Information received from the meteorological department has revealed that pre-monsoons for the current year have already passed and monsoons have already started.
However, the real taste of monsoons is yet to be experienced in the state till date.
It is said that monsoon in previous year was much prevalent during June and July.
However, this year, even though the month of June is nearing completion rainfall has not hit the state with the required quantity.
As such, the farmers in the state are facing problems.
The average rate of rainfall recorded last year in the month of June was 367mm and the total rate of rainfall recorded till June 20 was 259.48 mm.
However, this time, rainfall received so far is only 93.05 mm, thus recording a difference of 166.43 mm as compared to last year.
The rate of rainfall recorded during the month of June last year on a daily basis from 1st June to 20th June were respectively 5.04 mm, 0.03mm, nill, nill, 31.04mm, 0.06mm, 6.09mm, 18.09mm, 8.04mm, 48.06mm, 40.40mm, 41.02mm, 4.04mm, 8.05mm, 3.02mm, 11.01mm, 5.02mm, 11.05mm, 21.00mm and 8.30 mm.
As against this, the rate of rainfall recorded on daily basis during current month of June this time from June 1 to June 20 are 4.01mm, 87.08mm, 12.00mm, 10.04mm, 31.04mm, nill, nill, trace, nill, nill, 5.01mm, nil, 0.04mm, 3.08mm, 16.02mm, 1.02mm, 1.06mm, nill, 1.08mm and 1.02 mm respectively.
Even though the rate of rainfall has drastically decreased this year, information received from the meteorological department rules out likelihood of a drought like situation in the state.
There are evidences that required quantity of rainfall may be received in the state very soon, it added.
