Imphal, August 14 2011:
Wide Angle, Manipur (WAM)has urged Governor Gurbachan Jagat to establish a State Commission for protection of child rights in a move to ensure child right protection and development in the conflict ridden state.
WAM, a social development organization has submitted a memorandum in this regard on the eve of the country's Independence Day celebration here.
The memorandum said that the people of Manipur, women and children in particular, since the emergence of insurgency and its concomitant armed conflict have been bearing the brunt of the confrontation.
Yambem Laba, former state human rights commission member said, "there is an urgent need for establishing a state commission to effectively deal with issues of child rights violations" .
India enacted the commissions for the protection of child rights Act 2005 to implement the provisions of the UN convention on the rights of the child.
A division bench of the Gauhati High Court Imphal bench comprising of Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur and Justice Asok Potsangbam issued a directive to the state government to set up a state commission for the protection of child rights.
