Imphal, May 04 2011:
With a call for preserving morals and ethics among the Tangkhul youth, the three-day general conference of the Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (Tangkhul Youth Council) commenced Tuesday at Kachai village of Ukhrul district.
MK Shimray, senior scientific officer of the Environment and Ecology Wing of Manipur government who graced the opening function of the 9th general conference as chief guest recalled that Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long was founded with the sole objective of preserving the moral ethics, behaviour and character among the Tangkhul youth.
At one time, Ukhrul district was a dry state, selling of foreign liquors was strictly prohibited.
But today's youth is drowned in liquor and drugs.
Their morals have deteriorated.
With their character becoming loose, many undesirable crimes have been witnessed in the Tangkhul society, he observed.

The situation is so alarming that the Tangkhul society faces a cross roads.
When there is no good moral character among the youth, there will be no meaning of freedom, Shimray said calling the youth to leave bad habits and share in the work for the upliftment of the society.
Asserting that Tangkhuls lack respect to yesteryears' heroes, he said this is in total contrast with the Meetei.
The Meetei always remember and respect their yesteryears' heroes.
Tangkhuls should learn this lesson from the Meetei, he added.
The opening function of the general conference was participated by youths from 250 villages across Ukhrul district and was presided over by Saso Shaiza, an educationist.
EE M Themreishang of PHED office Ukhrul and incumbent president Solomon Ningshen of TMNL were the guests of honour of the function.
Office bearers of the TMNL for the next term will be held on the last day of the conference.
