State Level Fair on Traditional Seeds / Workshop held

A one day State Level Fair on Traditional Seeds and Workshop on Strategies for Climate Change Adaptation was held at the auditorium of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Iroisemba today.
The programme is organised by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Climate Change Project (HICAB Programme), College of Agriculture (CAU) Imphal.
Laltanpuii Vanchhong, Director of Agriculture, Dr Indira Sarangthem, Dean College of Agriculture, Dr S Basanta Singh, Director of Research CAU Imphal, Dr I Meghachandra Singh, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Imphal attended as the presidium members.
Speaking as the chief guest, Laltanpuii Vanchhong stressed on the need for adopting a climate resilient farming system in order to increase productivity.
He also emphasised on the importance of preserving traditional seeds which has been in place since olden days.
Speaking about the benefits of nutritionally rich traditional variety of seeds, Dr S Basanta said that more focus should be given on conserving the traditional variety of seeds and the farmers should be encouraged to continue such practice.
With the help of modern technology, high yielding varieties of seeds should be infused to already existing traditional varieties of seeds in order to yield more products which will help in improving the economy of the State majorly, he added.
Further he appealed to all parents to motivate their wards to pursue agricultural courses and excel in this field as the State needs efficient agricultural scientists.
