Imphal, July 01 2011:
St Joseph School Students' Van Service Union and United Club National Highway-53 have called upon the State authorities for making alternative parking arrangement to ease traffic congestion currently prevailing at Sangaiprou area.
A statement issued by the student transporters highlighted that due to haphazard parking of trucks on both side of the approach road to Sangaiprou Godown the students are being exposed to severe risk.
The Union president maintained that picking up or dropping the students at different schools in Sangaiprou area has become a tricky job for there are no space left for the lighter vehicles as most of the level spots are occupied by the loaded trucks leaving only the pot-hole dotted path for the van operators to negotiate with.
In case of traffic jam, which is very frequent in the last few days, the students reach their respective institutions well beyond the reporting time, the Union informed while expressing hope that State authorities would realise the situation and initiate remedial measures at the earliest possible time.
Suggesting that volunteers of local youth or women organisations contribute their mite in ensuring safety and timely attendance of the students by restricting parking of heavy vehicles at a distance of atleast 50 metre from the school perimeter, it also urged the truck operators to extend all possible cooperation for the well-being of the student community.
On the otherhand, United Club National Highway-53 has drawn the attention of the State Government for immediate repairing/development of approach road to the FCS/FCI Godown in Sangaiprou as well as the Jiri Dibong road that connects a similar food grain storage facility in the sub-division.
Speaking to newspersons today, Club president Th Shyama Khaba Nganba said due to congestion inside the Sangaiprou godown nearly 300 loaded vehicles remain parked along the Paite Veng road in the last few days resulting in not only causing severe inconveniences to others but also damaging the road.
Noting that students of nearby educational institutions had been enduring severe inconveniences due to occupation of the road by the loaded trucks and large potholes dotting the approach road, he also deplored that such prevailing situation had even resulted in violent altercation between the truck operators and those engaged in the transportation of school students.
Khaba suggested that parking slot being provided for goods carriers at Langjing Achouba area be utilised in an efficient manner with the deployment of security and traffic police personnel to streamline movement of heavy vehicles.
With regard to Jiri Dibong road, he said road development activities be expedited along with deployment of traffic police personnel.
