Imphal, July 01 2011:
A consultative workshop on the Manipur State Action Plan on Climate Change was held today at Oinam Leikai community hall along Heirangoithong-Manipur University road.
The workshop was jointly organised by the All Manipur NGOs Forum an the Human Development Agency under the aegis of Environment and Ecology Wing (EEW) which is the State nodal department for the action plan on climate change.
The workshop was attended by around 100 delegates.
The inaugural session of the workshop was attended by EEW Research Officer Dr T Brajakumar, general secretary of the Senior Citizens for Society Prof L Sadananda, assistant general secretary of the All Manipur NGOs Forum Kh Chinglen and secretary (administration) of the forum R Nongdrenkhomba as presidium members.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr T Brajakumar stated that the issue of global warming is the greatest challenge to mankind.
Whereas average annual temperature of the world rises by 1 degree Celsius, average temperature rises by 1.8 degree Celsius every year in Manipur.
Due to the alarming global warming, polar regions and snow covered peaks of the Himalayas have been melting at a much higher rate.
This has subsequently led to rise in water levels of all oceans, Dr Brajakumar said.
Quoting climatology experts, Dr Brajakumar said that Dhaka city would be submerged under water between 2030
and 2050 .
He said that the unpredictable weather conditions, decrease in agricultural output and intensified attacks by pests are all related with global warming.
Saying that no nation can escape from the challenge of global climate change, Dr Brajakumar asserted that the challenge should be tackled together by the whole of mankind.
The State action plan has six components viz; eco-system, bio-diversity and livelihood sustainability, water, agriculture, health, forest, energy, urban planning and research and development and human resource development.
