Imphal, July 01 2011:
The seventh death anniversary of Pebam Chittaranjan, popularly known as 'Human Torch after he self-immolated himself against the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act would be celebrated in three different places on August 16 .
Speaking to media persons at their office at Konjeng Hazari Leikai, Sega Road today, MSF president Laishram Ibomcha said that the death anniversary of Chittaranjan would be observed at Imphal, Jiribam and Bishnupur.
For the event to be observed as 7th Students Martyrdom Day, an observation committee has been constituted and all preparations for the event are nearing completion, Ibomcha says.
The main function would be held at Imphal where floral tributes would be paid to Pebam Chittaranjan at her memorial tomb at Takhellambam Leikai, Sega Road which would be followed by a public procession till THAU ground.
A public meeting would also be held at THAU ground, Ibomcha said.
Talking about the significance of observing Chittaranjan's death anniversary, MSF general secretary Anash Shah reminded about the brutal rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama by Assam Rifles troops in the night of August 10, 2004 .
This triggered a massive and prolonged mass movement with an unwavering demand for repeal of the dreaded AFSPA from Manipur.
When the Government failed to respond in any positive manner to the intense and sustained mass movement, Pebam Chittaranjan Mangang, then advisor of MSF self-immolated himself at Bishnupur on August 15, the Independence Day of India in 2004 .
He succumbed to the wounds next day.
The death anniversary is being observed in honour of the supreme sacrifice made by Chittaranjan, and also to keep alive his ideals and principles.
The MSF general secretary appealed to all to attend the death anniversary observance of Pebam Chittaranjan enmasse.
