Imphal, June 14 2015 :
World Blood Donor Day 2015 was widely observed in Manipur on Sunday.
State Blood Transfusion Council, Manipur, State AIDS Control Society (MACS) and Life Savers Manipur jointly organized a function to mark the day at GM Hall.
On the occasion, State Blood Transfusion Council, Manipur director Dr RK Roshi highlighted the need for increasing the rate of blood donation to save more lives.
"Donating blood is a great job of generous people.
But the rate is still low," he stated.
Dr Roshi said a target has been set to meet the actual requirement of blood in the State by 2020 and added that this blood will be from donors.
JNIMS Blood Bank medical Officer Dr K Surjit, who was also attending the function, said donated blood saves more than 20,000 lives in the State every year.
He noted that rate of blood donation is higher in advanced countries comparing to developing country like India where the demand for donated blood is relatively high.
"We need more blood from donors," he said.
Blood donors were also presented with gifts on the occasion.
Blood Donor Committee of RIMS also observed the day at the hospital complex.
RIMS Director Prof S Rita, Medical Superintendent Prof Amuba, Dean of RIMS Academy, Prof AK Joy and RIMS Blood Donor Committee advisor AK Bhoghen shared the dais on the occasion.
