Ranjit was PREPAK cadre: case report

Imphal, May 10 2011:
Police report regarding the custodial death of Thokchom Ranjit of Itam village of Imphal east district on May 8 said that he was arrested as a PREPAK cadre who involved in carrying out extortion from government and non-government organisations at Nungoi areas.
Thokchom Ranjit, had died in the custody of the Imphal East police commandos at 9.45 am.
Following a strong protest from the villagers of Itam where the deceased hailed from sub-inspector RK Brojen and four other personnel involved in the arrest of Ranjit have been placed under suspension.
Ranjit was picked up in a raid at his house as a hardcore cadre of the outlawed organisation.
On the way to hand over to Lamlai police station, the accused, Ranjit, complaint of not feeling well and requested to bring him to hospital for medical treatment.
Accordingly, the police party admitted to the emergency ward of JNIMS hospital.
But, the doctor who attended medical treatment declared that Ranjit was dead.
Mention may be made that family with the support of villagers had strongly protested against the custodial death of Ranjit demanding termination of the commander of the police from his service and suspension of other personnel and conduct an inquiry.
However, following an agreement between a JAC formed in connection with Ranjit's death and government, the dead body has been taken back by the family yesterday after postmortem at JNIMS morgue.
