Imphal, May 10 2011:
A pottery production cum training centre would be opened at Thongjao under Khadi Commission of Government of India.
Necessary fund for the centre has been already released by the Khadi Commission and compound fencing work initiated, said a source.
Expressing that the centre would go a long way in enhancing skill and knowledge of the local potters, it noted that though pottery is a very old vocation in Manipur and different designs are produced here, these pots are not very decorative or sturdy enough.
The centre would have the capacity to impart training to 300 to 400 potters in a year for which experts would be invited from outside the State to train local potters on making of strong, less brittle and decorative pots.
Construction of the centre would be completed very soon.
Nevertheless, pots made in Manipur are very popular outside the State.
As such, the upcoming centre would also focus on expanding pottery market by enhancing quality of pots.
