Imphal, November 28 2013:
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, who is also in-charge of the Power Department, seems to have divided the whole State into two regions- one with 24x7 power supply and the other with not more than five hours of power in a day.
People in the heart of Imphal City and other areas under Imphal Municipal Council are enjoying un-interrupted power supply with the installation of pre-paid metres.
However, the rest of the people in the State are in the dark world with unreliable power supply for not more than five hours in a day.
The aggrieved citizens feel that the Government is following the 'divide and rule' policy with regard to power supply in the State.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, on official of Power Department said that the power situation in the State has become very critical, due to which "forced load-shedding" or "extra load-shedding" has been adopted to curtail power supply to the consumers.
Normally, power is supplied for six hours each during day and night time.
The power supply would now vary from time to time, he noted.
The official further said that the State gets 32 megawatts of power for its daily consumption from the Loktak Project which is run by National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC).
The 32 megawatts even include free share of 12 percent for which the State is entitled.
The State's share from various power plants has gone down drastically.
The State has received not a single megawatt of power Bongaigaon Power Plant.
Furthermore, there is no power supply to the State from Ranganadi Power Project during day time.
Only seven megawatts is received during night time from this project.
The share from AGPT Thermal Power Plant, Doyang, Kathalguri, Kopili and Khangdong Power projects have gone to less than 10 megawatts, he stated.
The official maintained that the power supply in the State could have been augmented with the commissioning of Palatna Power Plant in Tripura.
However, as of now power cannot be generated from this plant due to certain technical snag.
The State's power supply would be improved greatly once power is generated from this plant most likely by March next years, he added.
