The second edition of the state level Manipur Pineapple Festival was opened today with grandeur and festivity at Dr Kalam ground, Bunglon High School campus in Churachandpur district.
Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ph Parijat set the ball of the festival rolling by lighting the candles.
The inauguration programme of the two-day long Pineapple festival was graced by Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ph Parijat, MTDC Chairman and MLA of Henglep Assembly constituency, T Manga Vaiphei and District Officer of the Horticulture department, Ngulkhanthang as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Parijat said Manipur is a home of several fruits and herbs.
He said different fruits are found at different places of the state.
Stressing on the nutritional value of fruits and its economic viability, Ph Parijat said the state needs to encourage the farmers.
Parijat also noted that sections of the people are solely relying on various horticultural produces for their sustenance.
He observed the absence of marketing venues is a headache for the farmers, adding that the government is mapping to provide marketing avenues to the farmers.
Observing that such festival will go a long way in promoting the horticultural produce of the state, the Minister assured to press the government to include funds for staging of such festival in the budget.
He said the government will endeavour to facilitate organising of the third edition of the festival as a full-fledged State festival.
On the sideline, Minister Parijat also assured to construct a Primary Health Sub-centre at Bunglon village.
Villagers of Bunglon area have taken the pride of being the largest producer of the Kew variety of Pineapple in Manipur.
It may be mentioned that there are two varieties of pineapple in Manipur � Kew giant and Queen Varieties.
The Kew variety is largely concentrated in Churachandpur district.
A souvenir entitled 'Footprints' was also released to mark the occasion.
Showcasing of various cultural dances also marked the first day of the state level Pineapple festival.
The Songpu Gangte Farmer of the Year Award was given to Kilkholal of Khousabung village for his outstanding achievements in pineapple farming.
It is worth noting that one of the sons of Kilkholal � a mere pineapple farmer � is an IRAS officer.
He raised seven of his children with the income generated from pineapple cultivation.
A seminar on pineapple cultivation was another significant highlight of the day's programme.
Experts and scientists from Central Agriculture University (CAU), Iroishemba led by Prof Wahengbam Ingo Meitei have presented papers.
The second day of the festival will be marked by the Manipur Pineapple Queen Contest tomorrow.
