Imphal, February 27 2013:
The Naga People's Front (NPF), Manipur State unit has called upon all the opposition parties in Manipur to join hands unitedly and fight against the rampant drug smuggling allegedly by the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government.
"The revelation of the involvement of senior Congress MLA TN Haokip' son in drug smuggling is a tip of an ice-berg," said the NPF, Manipur State unit today.
It alleged that there has been strong indication of the people-in-power in the state government to have been involved in the drug affairs.
To drive home its point, the Manipur unit of NPF cited the recent case of the abolition of Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) in Manipur by the state government after the SIU had seized a huge quantity of drugs amounting to over Rs 1 crore from the Imphal airport.
"It was only because the people-in-power were involved in that airport drug shipping, the state government as an act of retaliation had wiped out the SIU," the NPF stated.
The NPF then said spreading drugs in such hefty quantity in the state amounts to killing of thousands of youths.
"The Ibobi Singh led government in collaboration with the high officials of the security forces have been dealing in drug smuggling for a long time now and few days ago it came out to the open as they could no longer conceal the mafia business," further alleged the NPF.
The party also said that just to divert the attention of the people the state government was saying that the case of the airport drug seizure has been handed over to an investigating agency.
"We, in the interest of the general public appeal every like-minded parties to unitedly start a movement against drugs in the state," appealed the Manipur State unit of the NPF.
